Men’s basketball picks up home win

The NMU men’s basketball team snapped a seven-game losing streak with an impressive 85-82 win over Northwood (5-7 GLIAC, 7-13 overall) on Saturday, Jan. 29. Freshman guard Matt Everson said he was happy to break the streak and hold on for the win.

“It feels great, seven losses in a row gets pretty tough,” Everson said. “We stuck with it today and finally pulled out a win.”

Everson hit two threes early in the game to ignite the ’Cats offense and tied his season high with 17 points on 6-8 shooting from the field. The ’Cats made big defensive plays and grabbed a couple of crucial offensive boards down the stretch while shooting 52.9 percent for the game. Head coach Doug Lewis said he liked the effort from his team.

“We played with some heart, we played hard and we competed for 40 minutes and that’s all I ask from my guys,” Lewis said. “It just feels good to fight to the end and get a win at the same time.”

Junior center Jared Benson had a huge double-double with 23 points and 13 rebounds. Junior forward DeAndre Taylor dropped in 14 for the ’Cats, while freshman forward Matt Craggs and sophomore forward Mylan Murphy contributed 12 and 11 points to the scoring effort. The ’Cats were able to hold on to the lead down the stretch, hitting 87 percent of their free throws to seal the win.

On Thursday, Jan. 27, the ’Cats hosted the No. 17 ranked Hillsdale Chargers (9-3 GLIAC, 15-3 overall). NMU gave the Chargers all they could handle but came up short down the stretch, losing 76-73.

“I think we played pretty hard, we just had a couple of mental breakdowns at the end of the game,” Taylor said. “The game is 40 minutes and we got to play the whole 40 minutes.”

The ’Cats took a 36-33 lead into halftime off a buzzer-beating 3-pointer from sophomore forward Joe Simon. Northern held a 57-47 lead with 10:47 left to play but couldn’t close out the game.

“Hillsdale is a good team; you got to give them credit,” Lewis said. “They made plays when they had to and we didn’t.”

Junior guard Martin Gross came up short on a game winning 3-point attempt with seven seconds left, and DeAndre Taylor was unable to get a clean look  at the final shot after a full court inbounds pass with half a second left.

“I was just proud of our guys, that we competed we played hard and gave ourselves a chance to win,” Lewis said.  “I don’t believe in moral victories, but I can’t be mad at my kids.”

Benson led Northern with 15 points and nine rebounds. Taylor scored 14 points and Craggs added 13. Gross and freshmen guard Chris Paquin each added 11 points to round out the ’Cats scoring attack.

On Thursday, Feb. 3 the ’Cats will travel to Detroit to take on the No. 21 ranked Wayne State Warriors (10-2 GLIAC, 14-4 overall). Then on Saturday, Feb. 5 the Wildcats battle against the No. 5 ranked Findlay Oilers (10-1 GLIAC, 17-1 overall).
