Northern Nooks – Touring the ins and outs of NMU’s campus

There are many places on campus that the everyday student doesn’t know about. Those places are the focus of Northern Nooks, a new online video tour of the little known spots that furthers students’ experiences at NMU.

This week, Northern Nooks goes to a place that faculty and alumni take pride in, but not many students know about: The Beaumier Historical Center in the first floor of the Cohodas building. Our tour guide for this week was curator Dan Truckey.

The center is not just the only museum on campus, but also stores priceless memorabilia of the university’s history. In addition to the displays on the floor, Truckey showed me items like NMU’s first computer, old Radio X broadcasting equipment, promotional items with NMU’s original logo and lighting fixtures from demolished Kaye Hall. The center uses a walk-in vault for its most valuable items and multiple cabinets for its “Land of Forgotten Trophies.”
