About us

The North Wind is an independent student publication serving the Northern Michigan University community. It is partially funded by the Student Activity Fee. The North Wind digital paper is published daily during the fall and winter semesters except on university holidays and during exam weeks. The North Wind Board of Directors is composed of representatives of the student body, faculty, administration and area media.

February’s athletes of the month

Martin Banerud and Christina Turman of the Nordic ski teams have been selected as Northern Michigan University’s athletes of the month.

Banerud finished first in both the 10k classic and 10k freestyle at the NCAA Regional to qualify for NCAA Nationals. He also finished second in the 20k classic in the Central Collegiate Skiing Association and eighth in the freestyle. Banerud will compete in his last race as a Wildcat this week at Nationals. He is a senior captain from Oslo, Norway.

Turman’s month consisted of a second place finish in the 5k freestyle at the NCAA Regional, a third place finish in the CCSA Championship freestyle race and fourth place finish in the classic at the conference championship. Turman will be representing NMU at Nationals this week for her last time. She is a senior captain from Fairbanks, Alaska.

NMU will be competing at Nationals this week. The men’s 10-kilometer and women’s five-kilometer freestyle cross-country races will take place on Wednesday, March 9.  The women’s 15-kilometer and men’s 20-kilometer classical races will be held Friday March 11.
