About us

The North Wind is an independent student publication serving the Northern Michigan University community. It is partially funded by the Student Activity Fee. The North Wind digital paper is published daily during the fall and winter semesters except on university holidays and during exam weeks. The North Wind Board of Directors is composed of representatives of the student body, faculty, administration and area media.

Police arrest suspects after high-speed chase through Harvey

Police were led on a high-speed chase Monday, Nov. 14 that started in Harvey.

Marquette Police and Chocolay Township Police Departments attempted to stop a gold 1999 Chrysler 300 in the area of Silver Creek Road and US-41. The vehicle was wanted in connection to an investigation into a breaking and entering that occurred in Waushara County, Wis. early last week.

When officers stopped the vehicle and approached it, the vehicle fled the scene southbound on US-41. According to a police report, the vehicle reached speeds over 100 mph during the chase. Officer chased the vehicle until it started to have engine problems and the vehicle eventually was stopped in the area of US-41 and North Peterson Road in Alger County.

The driver and passenger both ran from the vehicle when it stopped. An officer chased after the driver and apprehended him a short time later by deploying his Taser, according to a police report. The passenger suspect ran into a wooded area and wasn’t caught until hours later in Marquette.

Facebook users  become victim to graphic image spam attack

Facebook, for the last couple of days, has been flooded with porn, violent images and other graphic content.

According to CNN.com, Facebook said they were hacked and had a security team working to identify the cause of the spam. The images flooded Facebook news feeds for about 24 hours.

Many users saw images that included hardcore porn and Photoshopped images of celebrities. Images of teen pop star Justin Bieber in sexual positions, multiple images of abused dogs and other horrific illustrations were posted. The photos appeared for about 48 hours and many users were distraught.

The Facebook statement said the site has built a mechanism to shut down pages sharing the links and contacted people affected by the attack with information about how to protect themselves, according to CNN.com.
