NW Ad Policy

Since 1972 the North Wind has served the student body of Northern Michigan University and the surrounding community by providing a student-run newspaper. At the North Wind we dedicate our work to represent issues that matter the most to NMU students. 

The ad staff works extremely hard to provide all your marketing needs in reaching NMU students. We have PDF, newsletter and audio ads and will work with you to meet your advertising needs. The North Wind respects the right to deny content that does not meet the advertising standards set by the North Wind. The following are the current advertising standards that must be met prior to obtaining ad space. 

 

Types of ads accepted

All advertising must conform to legal standards (nothing illegal can be advertised).

Alcohol, tobacco, and cannabis related ads accepted – age disclaimers should be apparent on the advertisement – The North Wind reserves the right to limit these types of ads. 

Ads subject to FTC rules (diet pills, medicines, supplements, etc.) should meet regulations for their type of ad.

Gambling, casino, related ads.

Note: The North Wind runs these ads as a percentage of overall advertising and may limit size or frequency of publication. 

Real Estate: All display residential real estate advertising must contain one of the following: 1. The Equal Housing Opportunity (EHO) logo, which includes the words “Equal Housing Opportunity,” or 2.“We are pledged to the letter and spirit of U.S. policy for the achievement of equal housing opportunity throughout the Nation. We encourage and support an affirmative advertising and marketing program in which there are no barriers to obtaining housing because of race, color, religion, sex, handicap, familial status or national origin.”

Ads for firearms (except hunting firearms at retail)

Advertisements that mimic North Wind style or content, or appear to be an editorial product of the North Wind

Opinion section ads are not accepted to ensure that students have a free and open forum to share their thoughts. 

Discretionary ads – the North Wind reserves the right to not accept advertising for other reasons on a case by case basis. Reasons we might not accept an ad include:

* Inappropriate content, language, violence, sexual 

* Ads that may be offensive on religious, racial or ethnic grounds

 * Ads that are purposely misleading, inaccurate or fraudulent that could negatively influence NMU students

 

Ad checklist

Ads that would like to appear in publication need to be filled out 7 days prior. If an ad is incorrect revised versions may be sent 48-72 hours to production. After that point, we don’t guarantee ad placement or publication as first agreed on, but it will appear as soon as available.

Press releases:

Any releases should be directed to the editorial department, not the advertising department. We do not accept payment to run press releases.

Social Media ads

The goal of the North Wind’s social media platforms are to offer a place for students to receive their news content and express their opinions about editorial content. To preserve this platform the North Wind reserves the right to limit advertising over social media to the “story” functions of said platform.

Facebook 1080 x 1920 pixels 9:16 ratio

Twitter 1080 x 1920 pixels 9:16 ratio

Instagram 1080 x 1920 pixels 9:16 ratio

 

Frequency:
Individual advertisers can not have their ads appear daily on stories for consecutive days, but multiple advertisers can appear daily.

Single platform story ad for 2 days a week: $40
