NMU Sports Hall of Fame to induct seven new members in class of 2007

This Friday, Oct. 5, seven former standout Northern athletes and coaches will be enshrined eternally in the NMU Sports Hall of Fame. Included in this year's hall of fame class are former hockey players Jim Hiller (1989-1992) and Bill Pye (1987-1991), former football players Dennis Porter (1964-1967) and Tom Bertoldi (1980-1983), volleyball player Jun Liu (1993-1996), swimmer Kendall Shorkey (1971-1974) and former swim coach Anne Goodman James (1986-1996).

NMU swimmers to open season with intrasquad meet

The NMU swim team looks to make a splash this season as they kick off their season Saturday, Oct. 6, when they compete in the Green and Gold meet. The Green and Gold meet is an annual intra-squad scrimmage which offers the 'Cats a chance to warm-up before facing tougher competition.

Campus active-shooter policy just now distributed to Northern faculty

NMU's plan to cope with a school shooter is only now being widely disseminated to faculty and administrators, five months after the Virginia Tech shooting, which killed 32 students and faculty and injured dozens more. The plan was written and published on Public Safety's Web site in the days immediately following the April 16, 2007 shootings at Virginia Tech.

Cross-country ‘Cats finish strong, prepare for future

The NMU cross country team dashed their way to early season success this past weekend as they finished fifth out of 22 teams at the Midwest Open in Kenosha, Wis. "I think of our 18 girls who ran, we had 16 of them run [personal best times], so we are really happy with how we finished," assistant coach Sten Fjeldheim said.

Wildcat soccer shutout streak ends

The Wildcats women's soccer team got off to a rocky start in conference play this weekend as the team tied Ashland University and then saw its four-game shutout streak snapped in a loss to Findlay University. On Friday, Sept. 7, the 'Cats (3-1-1 overall, 0-1-1 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) tied Ashland University (2-3-1 overall, 0-0-1 GLIAC) in a 0-0 draw.

LeBlanc sets scoring record in victory

USOEC boxing coach Al Mitchell has played an instrumental role in the success of a number of Olympians. And then there's Sten Fjeldheim.
