The word "schwag" is commonly used in Hollywood circles and within the entertainment industry to describe free goods given out at parties by companies, often with the company logos emblazoned for all to see. In Marquette, on the other hand, schwag is hardly ever provided at parties, and comes up in conversation even less.

NMU Hockey blanks Toronto in Exhibition

This article was previously printed in the Oct. 8 edition of the Mining Journal Entering the 2007-2008 season, the NMU hockey team was hoping to find a way to make up for the loss of 70 goals. That's how many tallies last year's departing class accounted for.

DEQ hearings take place on campus

In the University Center's Great Lakes Rooms on Monday, more than 100 individuals voiced their opinions concerning the proposed Kennecott Eagle Mine in front of members of the Michigan Department of Environmental Equality. Public discussion was largely against the mine.

Lollapalooza Once a touring festival, Lollapalooza has now found permanent home in Chicago's Grant Park, and has signed on to schedule each future festival there until 2011. This year, Lollapalooza will bring back a band from the festival's touring days when Pearl Jam takes the festival stage for the first time since 1992.

Men’s hoops nabs major U.P. recruit

Jared Benson, a 6-foot-10-inch center from Carney-Nadeau High School, is the first recruit to be signed by the NMU men's basketball program for the 2007-2008 season. After averaging 19 points per game and setting the school record for blocked shots, Benson was named to the Detroit Free Press Class D all-state second team and the Detroit News all-state fifth team.

NMU assistant wins Negaunee Invitational Class B MVP

NMU men's basketball assistant coach Dan Waterman has been busy these last few weeks recruiting players who've picked up awards throughout their high school basketball careers. Last weekend at the Negaunee Invitational Tournament, Waterman picked up his own piece of hardware.

Each year, the NCAA basketball season ends in dramatic fashion with the highlight reel entitled "One Shining Moment." It's with this video montage that the year's NCAA tournament is edited down to the three most spectacular minutes in all of sports. The video clip consisting of Luther Vandross' vocals, fist pumps and electrifying dunks illustrates the sport of college basketball, an untainted game in a corporate-sponsored world.
