The Wildcat soccer team (2-3 GLIAC, 3-6 overall) beat University of Findlay on Sunday, Sept. 30, 3-0, in their second home game of the weekend.

Head coach Matt Granstrand said he was pleased with the outcome of the weekend and the coherence of the team as a whole.

“It was good to finally see all 11 players on the field competing at the same time,” Granstrand said. “When we do that, we see that we can be successful, so it was a good weekend.”

Freshman goalkeeper Shelby Conard had six saves in the game against Findlay. Senior forward Amelia Johnson scored the ’Cats first goal of the game with an assist from sophomore midfield Ashley Katers.

Sophomore defense Taylor Smith clinched the win with two goals, one assisted by freshman midfielder Tiffany Trembley.

The ’Cats took on Tiffin University on Friday, Sept. 28 and lost, 3-2. Granstrand said he thought the ’Cats could have beaten Tiffin, but he is still happy with the outcome overall.

“I think we could have won the Friday game as well, but with the players we have out and the young players we have playing, I will take splits on the weekend,” Granstrand said.

Freshman midfielder Gabriella Garza said the Wildcats had a difficult time closing the game against Tiffin, but she is happy about the outcome of the Findlay game.

“Our team is really happy with our win against Findlay,” Garza said. “We worked together a lot better and it was nice to finally win a game after a streak of losses. We are now really looking forward to some wins next weekend.”

Freshman defender Hailey Beyrand said the games last weekend were good growing experiences for the Wildcats.

“It was really great coming together as a team for our second game of the weekend and getting the win,” Beyrand said. “That game made our team feel a lot better about our performance, which is always great. It gave us a little confidence going into the upcoming weekend.”

The Wildcats had a major comeback from the previous weekend where they lost Michigan Tech. Granstrand said the team has changed their playing style since their match-up with Tech and he believes it has paid off.

“What we have been doing is we decided to play a different style,” Granstrand said. “With the injuries and other factors playing a role, we spent the past week switching back to the style we used to play. The girls seem to have picked it up pretty well.”

Despite the fact that Garza didn’t make the stats sheet, Granstrand said he thought she did a good job and helped her team succeed.

“I thought she played really well in both games,” Granstrand said. “She didn’t get a goal, and I don’t think she even had an assist, but she did a really good job in the midfield and that is one thing we really need to compete.”

The ’Cats travel down state this weekend. They take on Northwood University at 2 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 5 in Midland, Mich. and then they play Saginaw Valley State University at noon, on Sunday, Oct.7.
