Friday, March 21 – Marquette, MI – The Culinary Students of Northern Michigan University are hosting their annual Memorial Chili Challenge at the Jacobetti Complex Commons this Tuesday, March 24 from 3 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.
“All proceeds will go to the Beacon House and their new ‘Fresh Food Program’ to help provide fresh, healthy food for their low-income guests,” senior Culinary Students of NMU (CSNMU) President Anna Dravland said.
Attendance is $5 for students, and $7 for the general public. Included are corn muffins, lemonade, and of course, chili tasting.
The event will have giant-sized games (Connect Four and Ladder Golf) with Double Trouble DJs playing for the entire duration.
CSNMU will sell raffle tickets for $1 each, $5 for 6, or a body length of tickets for $20 to raise additional money. If you bring a canned or non-perishable food donation, you can receive one free raffle ticket.
“[The] prize package is valued at approximately $1,000 including passes to the Celebrity Golf Classic worth $500, jewelry, Panache Events Décor Party Pack valued at $150, and there will be giveaways all throughout the day,” Dravland said.
The grand prize—Celebrity Golf Classic—has the highest earnings of any fundraiser in Marquette County, with tickets worth $250 per person. Celebrities such as Steve Mariucci, Tom Izzo, and Jay Feely will be at the event.
CSNMU is still accepting submissions for chili until this Saturday, March 22. Email Anna at [email protected] if you are interested in participating to get a participation form. You can make any kind of chili preferred and are required to prepare five gallons of chili.
“There are 1st place prizes for both amateur and professional categories,” Dravland said.
All contestants will receive a certificate, gift, and Chili Challenge t-shirt. Some categories are the Best Use of Heat, Most Original, and People’s Choice.
