Two NMU professors will describe their experiences living in a communist country at the Beaumier Heritage Center presentation “Growing up in Communism.”

In conjunction with the Beaumier exhibit “Cold War and the U.P.,” English professors Marek Haltof, Ph.D and Z.Z. Lehmberg, Ph.D will share their stories of being raised in the communist countries of Poland and China at 7 p.m. tonight in the seminar room of the Beaumier Center located in Gries Hall.

The presentation, which will allow the audience to interact with the presenters, will discuss some of the cultural adaptations and barriers that come with moving from one political system to another, said Lehmberg, who grew up in Guangzhou, China and moved to the United States to attend NMU when she was 20.

“You can read about it, you can watch movies about it, but having a real person who has lived through it tell you some stories or their experience— you can connect on a more personal level,” Lehmberg said.

The exhibit will open for viewing tonight. Admission to the event and exhibit is free. The Beaumier Center is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday.
