Campus Cinema will be showing Marvel Studio’s “Black Panther” on Saturday, Jan. 28 at 7 p.m. in-person at Jamrich 1100 as well as virtually. Those who sign up for the virtual showing on The Hub will gain access to the viewing link.
According to Campus Cinema’s website, “Campus Cinema is a student-run organization dedicated to enhancing and expanding the cinema life of students through classic and blockbuster films. Our members assist in choosing the films, advertising and coming up with promotions. Campus Cinema is a flexible organization where involvement is up to you.”
The organization allows those who attend NMU to view showing for free while Marquette community members pay $1. Many movies shown are still in theatres, however, Campus Cinema does partner with other organizations to put on exclusive screenings for special events such as “Black Panther”.
“For our ‘Black Panther’ screening this weekend, we actually partnered with the Diversity Common Reader Program to celebrate Black History Month that starts in February. They do have other events and discussions about ‘Black Panther’ to showcase how groundbreaking of a film it really is,” Luke Tschumperlin, freshman art and design major and president of Campus Cinema, said. “We also thought it would be a perfect fit with Chadwick Boseman passing away recently and a good way to honor his legacy.”
With the current pandemic preventing studios from releasing movies on the big screen, movie lovers are missing out on going to the theatres to see the new films in a different atmosphere, something many enjoy doing. Organizations such as Campus Cinema allows movie-lovers to be in a movie theatre-type setting while remaining safe.
“Campus Cinema has widely been affected by COVID-19 but we are working harder to create opportunities for all students to feel safe at our screenings. We have all of our seats socially distanced to help with keeping NMU students safe,” Tschumperlin said. “In past years we had very large turnouts for our screenings such as eighty people a show. This past semester has been a lot slower as we now usually have ten to fifteen students at a screening. Plus, community members are not allowed to come at the moment.”
A new feature Campus Cinema has implemented in response to COVID-19 is the virtual showings. Students who wish to view a screening of a movie and might not feel comfortable going in-person can watch from the comfort and safety of their home when signing up to attend virtually.
“The virtual screenings of our films is a brand new option that we now offer this semester so that students can watch our showings from the comfort and safety of their own dorm or home,” Tschumperlin said. “Most of our showings this semester will offer an in-person and virtual option with exception of a few films. If the streaming option has a good turnout this semester, we may decide to keep it in the future to allow all students to watch our shows.”
