Volleyball: NMU, GVST to face off in GLIAC semifinals in Vandament Arena
November 11, 2022
NMU Women’s Volleyball closed out the season last weekend at home with double sweeps of Purdue Northwest and UW-Parkside. The ‘Cats went 6-1 in the past seven games to push their final regular season record to 22-7 and earned a spot as the second seed in the GLIAC with a 14-4 conference record.
“The way that you still challenge yourself and push yourself is you go out there and just sweep and that’s what we’re doing,” Head Coach Mike Lozier said. “We are sweeping teams right now.”
The ‘Cats also honored their seniors on the team and will be continuing to push through as they hope to get to the national tournament. Senior outside hitter Lizzy Stark had 15 kills in the game on Saturday against UW-Parkside.
During the third set on Friday, the team was down 19-11 but was able to come back winning 28-26, showing just how tough this team can be in high pressure moments.
“Do I think we would have won the match if we would have lost the third set? I do, ” Lozier said. “But the mental strength that took to come back from 19-11 was really impressive. And I was really proud of them because they flipped a switch.”
This wins marks the move into the GLIAC tournament semifinals for the women’s volleyball team.
“Every team that wins championships is truly a team and we’ve worked really hard to build that,” Lozier said. “I think we have and now it’s just going out there and getting it done and leaning into that part of our game to help us get wins and tough, tough moments.”
On Wednesday, the ‘Cats took on Saginaw Valley State, winning 3-1 in the GLIAC semifinals, which sent them to the next round of the tournament. The Wildcats’ next game is on Friday, Nov. 11 at 6:30 p.m. in Vandament Arena, taking on Grand Valley State University in the semifinals.
