WLAX returns home after away series and bye week

The NMU women’s lacrosse team is back playing in the dome this weekend after an away series and a bye week. The ‘Cats are 9-2 on the season and will play only conference games to close out the season.

The ‘Cats most recently played in Ohio against Walsh and Ashland. NMU came home from the series 2-0. The team first took on Walsh walking away with the win 8-6. Freshman Avery Lorinser scored two goals in the win over Walsh along with fellow freshman Josie Lakosky who also put up two goals in the game. Another player also had two goals in the game, sophomore Laine Stanton. 

The team also took down Ashland with the final score being 17-6. The Wildcats dominated the game. Leading the way was senior Minnie Bittell who scored seven goals throughout the game. This is the second time this season that Bittell scored seven goals in one game tying her season high in goals scored in one game. Bittell is also five goals away from her overall goals on the season last year. Bittell is currently at 51 goals on the season, last season she had a total of 56 goals. 

Freshman Molly Ruhland had a season-high of three goals in the game. Laine Stanton had four goals in the game.

This weekend the ‘Cats are back home. Starting this weekend the team will be entering GLIAC conference play for the remainder of the regular season. 

The team is starting conference play against Grand Valley State. Grand Valley is 8-1 on the season. The last time these two teams played was in the GLIAC Championship for the 2023 season. The Lakers held onto the conference title 11-10. NMU looks to defeat the Lakers for the first time in program history.

The Wildcats will also be hosting Davenport this weekend. Davenport is 5-2 on the season. The team will play on Friday at 5 p.m. against Grand Valley and Sunday at 12 p.m. on Sunday.

The team will also be home next weekend when they will play Concordia St. Paul on April 13. 

The rest of the season the ‘Cats will play these same three teams only next time on the road with the end of the season approaching.
