NMU is striving to motivate students to be more involved in campus life through the Pick One promotional event, where students can earn points towards various prizes.

“We want to encourage as much involvement as possible,” Graduate Assistant for Pick One Bailey Gomes said. “We’re incentivizing involvement.”

This event will be held during the first six weeks of the fall semester with an end date of Monday, Oct. 7. The student with the most points gathered will win a grand prize which will be announced on Wednesday, Oct. 9.

When creating this promotion, Pick One used research that showed students’ first six weeks on campus are the most crucial, and they used this finding as a guide for the challenges. The organization says when students are more involved, they feel a sense of belonging, do better academically and are more likely to stay in school to finish their degrees.

Students can earn points by attending events like athletic games, on-campus wellness and community service. Pick One is intended to help students enrich themselves in different ways all across campus with different forms of events.

Prizes vary in required points, and the more points earned lead to more extravagant prizes. When looking at events on the Hub, students can locate tagged Pick One events to attend. At these events, students can scan a QR code on the Hub to earn the designated points.

Once students earn enough points to cash in for a prize, they can visit the Center for Student Enrichment (CSE) in the Northern Center to pick their chosen reward.

The student who earns the most points will receive the Pick One grand prize, which is a ski package. With this package the winner will receive four adult day vouchers for the Marquette Ski Mountain and a $500 gift card to Down Wind Sports.

Before the first day of classes took place on Monday, Aug. 26, there were already multiple students racking in enough points to cash in for prizes.

“Right off the bat ,it’s just been crazy involvement,” Gomes said. “We have never seen this much excitement for it.”

The promotion has already caused a spike in student involvement across campus, and it is only part way through its scheduled run time.
