NMU WellBeing to host Wildcat World Mental Health Day

Categories:

In honor of World Mental Health Day, which is celebrated every Oct. 10, NMU’s WellBeing department is hosting its very own Wildcat World Mental Health Day.

The World Health Organization recognizes this day as a time to spread awareness surrounding mental health and continue efforts to support those within the community.

WellBeing has events planned throughout the week for students to attend to better their wellbeing and support their mental health.

WellBeing is hosting the Wildpups on Monday, Kahoot mental health trivia on Tuesday and a WellBeing Drop-In event where students can make origami on Wednesday. A variety of other events will be hosted across campus on Thursday, such as the Mind Over Miles 5K and a Treat Yourself event, which will be hosted in collaboration with NMU Cosmetology.

“We really want to highlight that we have so many resources on campus for mental health and physical wellbeing, especially with our peer educators now being on campus to help promote a variety of events, campaigns and activities [centered] around wellbeing,” said Jessica Corkin, NMU’s WellBeing Promotions Coordinator.

The Mind Over Miles 5K will be the largest event held during the week to promote the connection between mental and physical health. Registration is still open to join the 5K and can be completed on NMU’s ticketing services website until Monday, Oct. 7. Students are encouraged to sign up whether they want to walk or run.

The trail goes through a scenic loop around campus and finishes by the WellBeing Center. For those who still want to participate but do not want to partake in the physical activity portion, the WellBeing group is also taking volunteers to help host the event. More information for volunteering can be found on the WellBeing Center’s Instagram.

“[Wildcat World Mental Health Day is] a fun celebration to take inventory of our own mental health and how we can keep improving it,” Corkin said. “This helps bring people together to promote our wellbeing as a group and make mental health more accessible.”
