On Sept. 27, students met at the OLA Pavilion to be a part of a campus cleanup hosted by NMU’s Conservation Crew.
Upon arriving, students were handed supplies such as green buckets and trash bags. Afterwards they split up into groups, so they could clean multiple areas around campus at the same time. When the event ended, a total of 15 pounds of trash was collected with six buckets filled.
Taylor Kenyon and Anna Tousley co-lead the Conservation Crew.
“Doing cleanups shows that we are keeping the campus free of trash. When people see us cleaning up it will hopefully lead them to also want to keep the space green,” Kenyon said.
Northern Michigan University is known for the natural landscape that surrounds it, and the efforts the university makes to keep it clean. This campus group will continue to organize cleanup events throughout the semester before winter comes to continue working on protecting the wildlife here.
“It’s important to keep the campus clean, especially since there are a lot of native species around that are important to the ecosystems in Marquette,” Tousley said.
The NMU Conservation Crew is always growing and encourages students to join their efforts.
“Our club is a good way to meet people who share common goals,” Kenyon said. “We focus on being outside in nature and making sure we respect it through these cleanups [and] that we are able to leave it better than we found it.”
