Walking up the hill towards Jamrich Hall, laughter could be heard as students stood in line, wincing. Students stood in front of them with plates of whipped cream. Moments later, each “pie” was shoved into the faces of the students before them.

NMU Greeks hosted their Greek Pie Contest on Wednesday, Oct. 16 in the Academic Mall, where students donated $2 per pie. The event was a competition among each Greek organization. Whichever organization raised the most money won a paddle, which is a traditional gift shared among them. The proceeds went to the Marquette Warming Center.

“It’s pretty cold today, but it’s a lot colder for the homeless people in Marquette. I think that’s really good symbolism, and we’re out here, raising money and doing well,” Greek Council President Jack Martin said.

Seeing students’ faces covered in whipped cream lightened the evenings of passersby while supporting an important cause. NMU Greeks continued to build their bonds, and they will continue to raise money in similar ways in the future.

“Marquette is a really cold place in Michigan, and I think we really need to understand what people in our community go through,” Martin said. “I think it’s really important for students to show up in the community.”
