Over the weekend and on Wednesday the NMU volleyball team traveled to Grand Valley, Wayne State, and Michigan Tech. The Wildcats currently sit 14-7 overall and in the GLIAC conference, the team is 8-3.
The Wildcats fell to both Grand Valley and Wayne State over the weekend. The team first lost to Grand Valley 0-3.
“It was pretty disappointing you know to go 0-2…we were not prepared in that moment to compete…you go through Friday and you say okay what do we learn how can we be better for Saturday and I don’t know if we really made the changes we talk about.” Head Coach Mike Lozier said.
Despite the loss to Grand Valley the team fought hard. One of those players was sophomore outside hitter Helen Beiring who had six kills, four digs, and two blocks.
The team then traveled down further to Wayne State where they came up short again this time falling to Wayne State in a close game 2-3. Senior middleback Meghan Meyer had five kills, one dig, and one block.
“We got to stop being really good at talking about stuff and actually start applying the things that we’re talking about and so after Saturday’s you know unfortunate loss we re-evaluated.”
After the weekend the team traveled up to face the rivals of Michigan Tech winning the game 3-2. In the win over Michigan Tech senior Jacqueline Smith had 28 kills, 19 digs, and two blocks. Sophomore libero Liesl Haugen had 31 digs.
This weekend the team will stay home when playing on both Friday and Saturday. First, on Friday the team will host Purdue Northwest at 4 pm. The team will then play Parkside also at 4 pm. Saturday will also be senior night honoring the five seniors on the team. This is also the last weekend of the season that the Wildcats will be at home. The rest of the season will be played on the road for the team.
“It’s just like a really narrow Focus week for us hopefully because we play you know in Houghton on Wednesday and then we’re at home Friday and Saturday for two important matches.”
