Music binds us together and has ancient origins. Humans coming together to share experiences, emotions and inner thought through song is believed to be one of the first steps we took as a species to build culture and community.
The NMU student chapter of the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA) put on the first of what promises to be a long line of events, a Monster Mash Karaoke Bash. On the night before Halloween, singers, ducks and actresses came together and sang their favorite songs.
The students of the ACDA planned this event to raise funds for the upcoming national conference in Dallas, Texas in March 2025. The conference promises to introduce attendees to international live music and connections to other choir groups from around the world.
In these early career-forming years of college life, it is important for students to reach out when opportunities arise and make connections that will last a lifetime.
The group sold mocktails and spots in the costume contest for just a dollar. The cheers in support of the brave souls who took the stage were free.
Although this is the first time the ACDA has held an event like this, it was a hit. A great opportunity was presented for students to put their stage fright to the test. Students were encouraged to find their voice through their favorite songs and singers. There were plenty of Chappell Roan and Taylor Swift songs to go around. Those who were not ready to go on stage could sing along from the crowd.
Harley Quinn and Holly Golightly sang an unlikely duet about their surprising frenemy relationship as the crowd followed along. The inhibitions of the shy audience vanished, and the students found their voices joining together.
Fantastic displays of costumes, dances and some acrobatics filled the room adding to the ambiance and excitement.
The Monster Mash Karaoke Bash was a raging success for ACDA. However, making it across the country to a renowned event will take a lot of resources, so the group is planning more events to raise awareness and possibly more funding for their chapter.
