The big screen came alive with nostalgia on Sunday, Nov. 3, with a screening of “Monsters University” in Jamrich Hall. This week’s show was in collaboration with NMU’s Greek Council, offering more than just a movie: it was a new twist on the average Campus Cinema experience.
Campus Cinema took the collaboration as an opportunity to test run a new interactive element to boost viewers’ engagement throughout the movie.
The group’s movie provider has offered a new addition to the screening with a digital bingo option. Students who attend the movie get the added bonus of a live action bingo game with the chance to win some fun NMU merchandise.
How it works: the game of digital bingo is played throughout the screening of the movie, and each student gets offered a different bingo board featuring different events that happen throughout the film. The leaderboard is similar to Kahoot, in that the faster you react to the event in the film, the more points you receive. The top six students at the event were given their choice of NMU bookstore merchandise donated by the Center of Student Enrichment.
“I would definitely like to do it again. I think that it was really fun” Campus Cinema President Helen Spehar said.
The game was not only an added element, but quickly became one of the highlights of the movie. The majority of students who attended the event decided to participate in the bingo game and the fun competitive nature added energy to the evening.
The new addition to the movies was a hit, and the group is looking forward to more regularly offering the option with their screenings. Campus Cinema usually hosts more recent movies, but “Monsters University” hit particularly close to home for the collaboration with Greek Council.
“I think it is fun to bring in new aspects to Campus Cinema, we are always showing movies but collabs bring in more opportunities for us and for the groups we are collaborating with,” Spehar said.
NMU’s Greek Council has been working towards a goal of being more active on campus and within student life, and collaborations are a way of taking steps towards having more of an outreach to “non-Greeks.”
Students can find both organizations on the Hub for more information. Campus Cinema hosts a new movie screening each Sunday night with free admission for students and snacks – and after the success of the new addition, some movie bingo.
