Students soar high at climbing event

Outdoor Recreation Center’s Midnight Madness brings students together.

The Outdoor Recreation Center hosted a Midnight Madness event at the indoor climbing wall in the Physical Education Instructional Facility (PEIF) on Thursday, Nov. 14.

During this event students were able to climb the wall while multi-colored moving spotlights were projected onto the wall with the main lights turned off to create a fun effect.

While this added a special element to the activity, the elements of friendship and collaboration throughout the student body remained present. As students waited to climb the wall, they watched and cheered on their fellow students as they ascended.

Student Andrew Mason, who has been climbing at the PEIF for two years, was in attendance at the event.

Mason was originally encouraged to come out to the wall by a past resident advisor for Van Antwerp Hall, and he encourages other students to get out of their comfort zone and participate in climbing activities.

“It might sound kind of mean, but like nobody really cares. You are never as weird, and you never stand out as much as you think you do,” Mason said. “Even if you do, people are nice. A lot nicer than they give them credit for most of the time.”
