After a delay and months of waiting, the night finally came. Jake Paul and Mike Tyson were going to face off in the ring for eight, two-minute rounds of boxing on the highly anticipated night of Nov. 15.
Now going into the fight I knew I’ve only ever seen UFC fights. My boyfriend and brother have told me UFC fights are very different from boxing, the style of fighting Paul and Tyson were going to battle in. Now knowing this, I know this review is coming from a girl who knows nothing about the sport, rules, or in general anything that was happening.
First thing I’d like to say is holy moly, the quality was horrible. I know everyone and their mom was watching this event live, but damn, I figured Netflix would have the streaming aspect down for the amount of people who were going to tune into this highly anticipated event. After getting over the fact the people on the screen were four pixels big, I could get on with watching.
Leading up to the main event, there were three rounds of boxing with various fighters. Now that I’ve watched the entire event I can wholeheartedly say the fights prior to the main event were more exciting than the one all the watchers were waiting for.
While watching the first fight, I was confused on why there was no blood, every UFC fight I’ve ever seen there’s been no lack of blood. Once I was informed there’s very little blood loss in boxing, I grew accustomed to the lackluster fights, but this changed in the final fight leading up to the main event.
The only female fight prior to Paul and Tyson taking the stage was by far the most entertaining one of the night. I must’ve disassociated when it started because I remember zoning back in and there was blood everywhere, faces being covered in Vaseline, and a cat fight on the screen.
Like most people on Twitter, I disagree with the outcome of the decision regarding the winner of that fight, but I digress. It happens, I’m just glad I didn’t have a parlay on the fight. All I’ll say is fighting with a huge cut under your eyebrow and battling blood getting in your eye for an entire fight is epic, and the fighter has my respect. Win or not.
Soon after, it was the time for the main event. I sat up straight and was on the edge of my seat, ready to see Tyson clobber Paul in the face.
Smoke blasted on the screen and “In the Air Tonight” by Phil Collins blared on my television screen, then a very slow moving green car moseyed its way to the ring. I never realized Paul had such an eye for dramatic flare.
After a few tough minutes of watching his entrance and seeing his brother Logan spraying Jake down with his own brand of deodorant, I was growing tired of the fight already. I also feared for the nostrils of anyone in direct line of contact to the deodorant fumes.
Once the green goblin car made it to the end of its little road, Paul got out and made his way to the ring, it was now time for Tyson to come out.
In comparison to the show put on prior, Tyson’s entrance was very tame and simple. Using the same smoke blasts, he excited the tunnel and walked straight to the ring with his posey behind him. I now believe it when people say sometimes short and sweet is better.
As the fight started I was very underwhelmed. I wanted someone to get their shit rocked and knocked out, although I preferred Paul to go down I just wanted more action in the ring.
The fight reminded me of a game of cat and mouse, or how my brother and I would fight when we were little and weren’t allowed to injure or even hit each other. There may have been a few solid punches, but all in all, there wasn’t anything to write home about. Perhaps there were more good ones, but I couldn’t see them because the quality was so poor.
The fight concluded and Paul was announced the winner, to my distaste. I may have not had the outcome I’d wanted but it was still an entertaining event to tune into, and kept me busy on a Friday night, so I cannot complain. I look forward to seeing who Paul fights next, and I’m curious to see if his next opponent won’t be twice his age.
