The NMU women’s basketball team is off to a hot streak with their season. The team faced off against both Minnesota Crookston and Bemidji State this weekend, where two very successful wins were able to be brought back to Marquette.
The team was home this past weekend, and is traveling to Minnesota this upcoming weekend. To recap the first game, the Wildcats faced off against the Golden Eagles where they were able to pull off a win, with a score of 85-69.
NMU was able to hold a strong lead for the second quarter of the entire game, with a 21 point lead being a strong point. Jacy Weisbrod, a junior, led the team with 26 points in the game, going 6-9. Sarah Newcomer added 17 points, with her fellow teammates Mackenzie Holzwart and Madison Schroeder adding 11 points and 7 points respectively.
The 10 Wildcats that saw the court in this game were able to add points and get a rebound. The largest lead of the game was 43-22, with Alyssa Hill making that score possible. The Golden Eagles scored the first points of the second half, with the score being 49-37.
Out of the 11 shot attempts that were made, only one made it to the basket. Though the gap was small, points were made on both sides, closing the gap to make it 61-52. After some amazing plays, the team ended the game with the score of 85-69.
Their second game of the home weekend was no easy task, but was able to secure the win with a score of 80-51. The first quarter of the game ended up being a tie with the score being 18-18. The Wildcats were able to close the gap with a score of 21-10 in the second quarter.
Leading the scoring in this game was Weisbrod, adding 27 points to the board. Newcomer added 13 points, Pytleski adding 13 as well. Hill added 8 points to the board. There was a lot of back and forth going into the third quarter, with only 4 points on each side making it anywhere close to the basket.
To finish off the game, the Wildcats held a very strong lead, with NMU scoring 15 points. Prior to the end of the game, Bemidji went 0-8 with five turnovers. NMU was able to hold a dominance of 23-0.
NMU only had 5 turnovers compared to Bemidji’s 14. The Wildcats only have a few remaining non conference games before they jump straight into the conference matches. The team travels to Duluth and St. Cloud, MN for back to back games.
The team faces off against Minnesota Duluth and St. Cloud State on Saturday, Nov. 23 and Sunday, Nov. 24. Following that set of games, the team stays home for the weekend, with conference games against Purdue Northwest and Parkside.
The team is wanting to make an appearance in the NCAA tournament again this upcoming season. Both games begin at 1pm Eastern Standard Time. Drive safe this holiday weekend.
