Over the weekend, the women’s wrestling team competed in the Alma Open. The Wildcats did not record a team score at the meet, but four wrestlers earned first-place finishes, and four more finished second.
The weekend before, Alma came up to Marquette, where the Wildcats secured a 32-16 win.
Two Wildcats advanced to the final match in their weight class, where they competed against each other for first place. Sophomore Yu Sakamoto faced off against Freshman Sara Schroder, with Sakamoto coming out on top to win the weight class, while Schroder finished second.
Another weight class featured strong performances from three Wildcats where Kailyn Garrett took first place, and Ozioma Ogu finished second.
Additionally, Alissa Caltagirone and Clarrisa Wangen both placed first in their weight classes, adding to the weekend’s win column for the Wildcats.
As the season winds down for the Wildcats, fans can catch the team at their final two home meets. The team will take a break this upcoming weekend but will return to action in Marquette for their last two regular-season meets.
First, NMU will host UW-Oshkosh on Feb. 2 at 2 p.m. Then, the Wildcats will close out the regular season at home on Feb. 8 at 6 p.m. against Grand Valley.
After the regular season, the Wildcats will head to postseason competition. The team will travel to Adrian, MI for the Northwest Regional Qualifier. Wrestlers who qualify at this meet will then move on to the championships.
Good luck, and go Cats!
