Hockey gets first sweep of the year heading into Tech Week

Over the weekend, the NMU men’s hockey team traveled to Bemidji, MN where they faced off against Bemidji State. The Wildcats secured wins on both nights, making their first sweep of the season.

The team remains unranked and sitting with a 4-19-1 record on the season.

On Friday, the team won 4-1. Goaltender Ryan Ouellette made 24 saves, allowing only one goal.

All four goals for NMU were scored by two players, each contributing two. Freshman Jakub Altrichter struck first, scoring twice to help the Wildcats to an early 2-0 lead. Sophomore Matthew Romer followed with two goals later in the game to secure the victory.

Building on their momentum, the Cats returned to the ice on Saturday and dominated Bemidji State once again, finishing with a 3-1 win.

In the net again was Ouellette, recording 33 saves on the night while allowing only one goal. Scoring for NMU came from three different Cats: freshman Ryan Duguay, freshman Grayden Slipec, and Altrichter, who netted his third goal of the series.

These outstanding performances by the Cats were well received as both Altrichter and Ouellette earned CCHA honors. Altrichter was named Rookie of the Week, and for the second time this season, Ouellette was awarded Goaltender of the Week.

The Wildcats are back in the win column just in time for Tech Week. When NMU and Michigan Tech met earlier this season, the Huskies came away with both wins, winning 3-0 and 6-3.

This week’s series opens Friday in Houghton, followed by Saturday’s game at home in the Berry Events Center. Friday’s game will start at 7:07 p.m., and Saturday’s at 6:07 p.m.

Get loud, and go Cats go!
