Over the weekend, the men’s basketball team played at home, splitting their two games. On Thursday, the Wildcats hosted Wayne State, but fell short in a 67-82 loss. The team bounced back on Saturday where they earned a 75-62 victory over Saginaw Valley State.
The Wildcats are currently 12-4 overall and 6-2 in the GLIAC.
Despite the loss, some Wildcats put up impressive numbers. Senior guard Gerald Gittens Jr. led the team with 17 points, four rebounds, and one assist. Joining him with a great performance was forward Dylan Kuehl who had 16 points, nine rebounds, and two assists. The team was outscored 48-29 in the first half but campaigned a second-half comeback that ultimately fell short.
The team was eager to bounce back against Saginaw Valley State on Saturday, and they delivered with a strong performance. It was a whole team effort with several players stepping up.
Junior forward Sam Privet led the way with 16 points and eight rebounds. Kuehl followed with 11 points, six rebounds, and three assists, while freshman guard Cal Klesmit contributed 12 points, one rebound, and one assist.
This week, the Wildcats are on the road. They will maintain their Thursday-Saturday game schedule. On Thursday, NMU will face Ferris State, ranked No. 8 in Division II, in Big Rapids. Following that game, the team will travel back to the U.P. and play at Lake Superior State, currently ranked No. 14.
Following the weekend road trip, the Wildcats will return home next week to host more GLIAC t matchups.
