The NMU women’s basketball team made a trip downstate and came back victorious. They faced off against Saginaw Valley State University (SVSU) and Wayne State. The final scores of the games were 69-59 and 66-61. The team’s current record is 16-6.
The team started their weekend with a victory over SVSU. The final score of the game was 69-59, with Jacy Weisbrod putting up an impressive 23 points during the game. The Wildcats had their best scoring game of the season, hitting over 50% of their shots. This was the first time this season for Northern and only the fourth occurrence for a team in GLIAC play.
Sarah Newcomer also contributed, putting up 11 points. NMU committed 21 turnovers in the game, their second-highest total of the year. SVSU had over 15 turnovers, and they also led in offensive rebounds. After a back-and-forth battle from both teams, this game came down to the final few minutes of play.
In the following game against Wayne State, the team had a lot on the line. They were tied for third place with the Warriors and needed this win to pull ahead. The Wildcats were successful in doing so, securing a 66-61 victory. This win moved them up in the standings, tying them for second place in the GLIAC.
The team had another strong game, shooting 17 of 23 from the field and 7 of 11 from three-point range. All seven players who hit the court scored at least six points, and four reached double digits. Abi Frazza posted a season-high 15 points, with Weisbrod right behind her at 12, followed by Alyssa Nimz and Mackenzie Holzwart adding 10 each.
There was plenty of back-and-forth action during the game, which kept the NMU players on their toes. The largest lead of the game was in NMU’s favor, at 61-55, but after some late-game action, NMU solidified the win with a final score of 66-61.
This win improved NMU’s record to 16-6 and snapped Wayne State’s five-game win streak.
The team had their last two home games this season, with a win over Lake Superior State University on Feb. 13 and a victory on Senior Day and Play4Kay on Feb. 15 against Ferris State University.
Play4Kay raises funds for cancer research. The GLIAC had all of its women’s teams “Play for Kay” on Feb. 15. All teams wore pink jerseys to honor individuals affected by cancer. All donations from those GLIAC games will go to cancer research and the Play4Kay foundation.
