In a world of never-ending chaos and anxiety, at times, laughter is the only thing we can turn to in order to bring a little light into our realities. The jesters of the modern day are known as comedians and have the special gift of making you giggle your problems away with one well-timed joke.

Northern Michigan University’s PrimeTime Productions hosted comedian Derrick Knopsnyder on Sunday, Feb. 23, from 9–10 p.m. in the Jamrich Lecture Hall.

“Northern Michigan is a great school, I love you guys up here,” Knopsnyder said in the middle of his show, while the audience laughed at his jokes.

Knopsnyder is well-known for his relatable humor, quick wit and energetic performances. He earned a master’s degree in science and a bachelor’s degree in professional golf management while balancing his love of stand-up comedy with his studies. His distinct blend of humor, charm and intelligence has made him stand out in the comedy world.

Knopsnyder’s comedic talent has been recognized in various competitions. Some of his highlights include winning the Stand Up to Cancer Comedy Competition in Huntington, West Virginia, and being a finalist in the Cleveland Comedy Festival.

His ability to connect with audiences through observational humor and self-deprecating anecdotes has made him a favorite among college crowds and comedy club audiences alike.

“I actually found him really funny, and I liked how much he was involving the audience and was trying to get to know us,” said audience member Brianna Lowery.

Knopsnyder made several jokes involving audience members, making an effort to get to know some of them by asking about their majors or what year they were. Most of the audience laughed at the jokes about themselves and the university.

Audience interaction is a crucial element of any comedy show, shaping the energy and engagement between the comedian and the crowd. This interaction can enhance the overall experience, making the show feel more personalized to the audience. Comedians often use audience cues—such as laughter, applause or silence—to adjust their timing, delivery and material, ensuring a dynamic and adaptive performance.

Comedy has often been an effective form of entertainment that gives viewers a chance to unwind, reflect and discover happiness in topics that may otherwise seem mundane.

Stand-up comedians use humor to discuss social issues, observations and personal experiences, frequently turning everyday situations into opportunities for laughter. In addition to flawless timing and delivery, the art of stand-up comedy demands the capacity to engage audiences with relatability and genuineness.

NMU’s PrimeTime Productions is always working on new and fun events for students to attend. The club regularly posts flyers around campus and on the Hub.
