St. Thomas hands NMU back-to-back losses in Wildcats’ home finale

Last weekend, the Wildcats fell in their final home series of the year against St. Thomas, dropping both games with scores of 0-3 and 3-4 respectively.

“I still think there’s a game there that we could have won,” said NMU Head Coach Dave Shyiak after Friday’s game. “Our penalty kill was good, but power plays have to get more pucks to the net.”

In game one on Friday, the Wildcats struggled to generate offense in a 3-0 loss to St. Thomas at the Berry Events Center. Tommies goaltender Jake Sibell recorded his first collegiate shutout, stopping every NMU attempt.

St. Thomas took an early 2-0 lead in the first period, capitalizing on a lucky bounce and a slick passing play. NMU responded with strong penalty killing and a dominant second-period push but failed to convert chances. The Wildcats’ lone power play in the third couldn’t break through, and an empty netter sealed their defeat.
