Josie Lakosky Leads NMU Women’s Lacrosse Team

The Wildcats took on Lewis University in the Superior Dome his past week as Josie Lakosky put on another flamboyant display of her skill, leading the women’s lacrosse team to a staggering 20-9 victory. This comfortable win comes as a bounce-back game after a disappointing loss to the fifth ranked Maryville Saints.

The Flyers would come out swinging in the first quarter, winning possession and immediately bearing down on netminder Zoe Montgomery. However, Lakosky would shut down Lewis’ high-
octane offense with some of her own, as she shook a defender and found the net for the first score of the game. Lewis and NMU would continue to play patty-cake, with every green and gold goal scored almost instantaneously answered with Lewis’ own. Lakosky would find the net again before the end of the 1st quarter, which would end in a stalemate of 3-3.

Lewis would take the lead at the beginning of the second with a quick goal, and the ‘Cats would be circling the ball around for a while to find an answer. Lakosky’s dominance would be inevitable as she picked out Taylor Priestly, who tucked away a behind-the-back shot to tie the game back up. The Flyers would put another one up on the scoreboard just a minute later from a capitalized foul, and then the field became a stage for the Josie Jamboree as Josie Lakosky went on to net a scintillating stretch of 5 goals. With Lakosky’s efforts, the Wildcats headed into the half with a 10-7 lead.

NMU would hit the field in a fleury as Maddi Blast would blast her third of the game into the net only 30 seconds into the third quarter. Northern would keep that same swift goalscoring speed, as the team would pile on an unanswered 6 goals that left the Flyers in shambles. At 7:44 left in the third, Josie Lakosky officially broke the program’s most points in a game record with 11, beating her previous record only two weeks prior. The team would end out the quarter with a mountain of a lead, 17-8.

The game would close out rather softly compared to the previous onslaught of NMU offense, with just 4 goals total being scored in the 4th . The final score read 20-9 as Josie Lakosky would finish the night with 7 goals, 6 assists and an eye-boggling total of 13 points on the day. This electric performance earned Lakosky a consecutive GLIAC Offensive Player of the Week Award, her third of the season, as well as being named an IWLCA Player of the Week. Lakosky leads the Cats on the road with their upcoming Friday bout against Indianapolis University and their Sunday matchup against Saginaw Valley.
