Heave Ho! Tau Kappa Epsilon members are preparing mentally and physically to take on their annual “Tub Push” to raise money for St. Jude Children’s Hospital. The event was originally scheduled to take place this past weekend, but due to unsafe weather conditions, the push will prevail on Friday, April 4.
“We put on this yearly fundraising event with TKE Week to raise money for St. Jude,” said Melvin Garcia, TKE president. “This year, we have accumulated over $7,500, which is triple our initial fundraising goal.”
The event offers both mental and physical challenges—proving that no battle will ever be as challenging as the battles the kids face within the walls of St. Jude hospitals across the country.
The requirements of the challenge include pushing a bathtub around campus for 24 consecutive hours. Members of TKE work as a team and take shifts completing their laps with the tub while community members and other Greeks cheer them on.
“This event is important to us due to the history behind it. Back in the day, they used to do it for fun, and over the years, we added a reason to do it and continue to have fun, all while on campus and doing it safely,” Garcia said. “We strive to continue setting examples of how powerful fundraising is and how important it is to us. We are striving to raise more and more each year.”
Students are encouraged to cheer on TKE if the bright red tub crosses your path on your way around campus and help spread the word to support their fundraising efforts. If you want to keep up with this 24-hour challenge, keep an eye on the TKE Instagram.
