Lacrosse ends weekend in split

This past weekend, the NMU Lacrosse team stayed home in the Superior Dome while there was yet another winter storm across the Upper Peninsula. Inside the Dome, though, the games were heating up. The team ended their weekend in a split against both Davenport and Grand Valley State University. The team’s current record is 7-4.

In the first game of the weekend, the team faced off against Davenport, where they secured a 9-6 win. Josie Lakosky once again dominated the field, securing a hat trick in the first quarter of the game and finishing with six goals. This was followed by Maddi Bast and Sophie Langsdale, who scored two and one goal, respectively. Zoe Montgomery made six saves.

The first quarter was NMU’s strongest period, as they were unable to find the net in the second quarter. In the final few minutes of the game, Northern worked together to pull ahead against Davenport and secure the win in the Dome.

The second game against Grand Valley had its challenges, including overtime, where NMU was defeated by a single goal. Northern led the entire game until Grand Valley tied the score in the final minutes of the fourth quarter. Lakosky led in scoring again with another six goals, followed by Bast, who recorded her 100th career point during the game. Langsdale and Taylor Priestley also scored, each of them scoring one goal. Montgomery finished with eight saves, helping the team until the very end.

With one minute remaining in overtime, Grand Valley scored the tie-breaking goal. This brought Northern to 7-4 overall and 2-1 in the conference.

Over the next few weeks, the team travels to St. Paul and St. Joseph, Minn., to compete against Concordia-St. Paul and the College of St. Benedict. The game against Concordia is a conference game.

Following these games, there are only four games remaining in the season, all of which are GLIAC games. The team is currently ranked No. 2 in the GLIAC, right behind Grand Valley.
