There’s a new leader at the top of the three-point leaderboard for NMU women’s basketball, and she can sling triples. Alongside a shellacking of the Davenport Panthers, 95-62 Saturday, a wide open look from the left side of the court ensured Jacy Weisbrod stands alone as the program’s all time leader in three-pointers with 251. The senior from La Crosse, Wis. passes Marissa DellAngelo (1999-02) to now own or co-own four records for the team. Weisbrod has a shot to break two more records for the program in the career and season three-point percentages. Weisbrod is currently at 41.9% for her career and 43.7% on the 2025-26 campaign, about four combined percentage points from both records.
“She’s playing really well right now, and she’s playing confident, but the same time, her teammates are finding her, and she’s put so much time and so much work into being the shooter that she is, that it’s really cool to see just the hard work and everything benefit her,” said head coach Casey Thousand.
Alongside her record setting day, Weisbrod led all players with 25 points, five rebounds, and three assists. Sarah Newcomer was right behind her, keeping up her phenomenal senior campaign with 24 points on 15 shots, with three boards and three assists of her own. As a team, the Wildcats were flaming hot from the field, shooting 55.2% overall and 56.2% from three-point land as a team.
The ‘Cats wasted no time pouncing on the Panthers, jumping out to a 29-10 lead after just one quarter, and they continued to push the pace all game long. An onslaught of threes in the opening frame by Newcomer and Weisbrod put NMU up early and allowed the Wildcats to control the pace of the game.
Nearing the end of the first half, Northern quenched an 18-9 run by Davenport with that record-breaking three from Weisbrod, allowing the ‘Cats to remain on top, 51-37, at the break. From there, NMU kept their foot on the gas, going on a 14-0 run to open up the third quarter to continue the ‘Cat attack on the Panthers. Northern also controlled the glass against Davenport, winning the board battle 45-22 en route to their near 100 point performance.
“We need everybody to contribute in some way, shape or form. And when you look at our assists, I think we have 20, 21 assists on Saturday, but it was a little bit of everybody had 2, 3, 2, 3, 2, 3, it wasn’t just one person who was passing the ball to them,” said Thousand.
NMU now sits at 18-4 overall and 9-3 in the GLIAC, with another couple of home bouts to prepare for. First up is the Saginaw Valley State Cardinals on Thursday, Feb. 5 at 5:30 p.m. After the battle between land and air, Northern will clash with the Lake Superior State Lakers on Saturday, Feb. 7 at 1 p.m. Both contests will be available on FloSports.
