There’s a train with a full head of steam, and it’s headed straight for the top of the GLIAC lacrosse standings. The NMU women’s lacrosse squad has sky high expectations for the 2026 campaign, and for good reason. Picked second in the preseason poll, the Wildcats trail Grand Valley State by just three points, closing the gap against the reigning conference champions, who have won five consecutive GLIAC championships.
“I’m really excited to finally see this group play someone other than ourselves,” said women’s lacrosse head coach Lindsey (LeMay) Majkrzak. “We finally hit that point in the season where you’re in about week four preseason, and everybody’s moving really fast, everybody’s playing really hard.”
Key pieces returning to the 2026 squad have heavily contributed to the hype around the program, including First Team All-GLIAC recipients Josie Lakosky and Katelyn Wozney. In particular, Lakosky had a program defining 2025 campaign, earning GLIAC Attacker of the Year and career highs in nearly every stat. Lakosky led all players in the conference in goals, goals per game, points, points per game, shots and shots per game.
Alongside Lakosky, Wozney looks to build upon her freshman year where she earned NMU Female Newcomer of the Year honors. Wozney was a key reason the Wildcats were able to control games, helping the ‘Cats lead the conference in draw controls while she herself was third overall in individual controls. Wozney also started in all 19 contests for Northern as a true freshman.
Along with Lakosky and Wozney, Northern Michigan has one more All-GLIAC nominee returning for 2026 in Sophie Langsdale. A midfielder for the ‘Cats, Langsdale was one of two Wildcats last year to have both 10+ goals and 10+ ground balls, which earned her an honorable mention spot in conference awards.
NMU will take their three conference award recipients and key contributors into the 2026 season with five straight home contests to open the year. The season will officially kick off today, Feb. 12, where the Wildcats will host the Calvin Knights at 5 p.m. The weekend won’t be quite over for Northern at that point, as they will clash with Northwood on Sunday at noon.
