The Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity appeal was denied and they were kicked off campus last week Thursday, March 31.
Lambda Chi Alpha is kicked off of campus for three years with an option of a review in two years. They were charged with violating the Fraternal Information and Programming Group (FIPG) Risk Management Policy’s alcohol policy.
The policy states that fraternities are not allowed to have underage drinking occur at their house. This is the fourth time that Lambda Chi was charged with violating this policy, said Chris Greer, dean of students.
“If they apply for reinstatement, and I think that’s a national organization issue, they will be on probation for their first year back,” Greer said. “We’ll talk about any restrictions that will be in affect during that period of probation.”
Lambda Chi got off probation with the university Dec. 31, 2009 and got off probation with their nationals this past January. Lambda Chi lost official Northern Michigan University student organization status and their Greek letters and any other fraternity designation has to be removed from their house for the duration of the suspension.
“It’s progressive; how many times do you put an organization on probation before you have to say that’s it,” Greer said.

I was shocked to here of the Lambda Chi’s being kicked off campus! I enjoyed many fun times there. Of all the fraternities on campus they were the most respected. When I went to NMU in the 1970’s I saw much more from those who didn’t belong to any fraternity.
Its very hard for me to imagine the Lambda Chi’s house being kicked off the campus, it just won’t be the same there without them. Hey Alvin Jackson a alumni

“honestly, it is sad. That the oldest frat on campus is gone! Just like it is sad that they demolished Kaye hall and built that ugly prison looking monstrosity in its place.”

Thats the truth. I’m an old timer and took classes in Kaye and Longyear. Those two halls gave NMU the “feel” of a university campus. In my opinion, NMU severed all ties with it’s history when it had Longyear and Kaye torn down. Other universities upkeep and preserve their old, historical buildings. I have never figured out why it was so impossible for Northern to save Longyear and Kaye. All thats left now are ugly, functional buildings.

What happened at the Lambda Chi Alpha’s was an everyday occurence at
Gries Hall in the 1970s. Hootie hoo

It is incredibly sad that this great organization has been shown the door. I am a NMU alumni and a Lambda Chi Alpha alumni. I was very involved in the leadership of the fraternity while I was an active member. The university was incredibly hostile to us for the entire time I was an active member and we were on no form of suspension at all. We would raise thousands of dollars and tons of food for the needy, homeless and our local veterans, all the while showing school spirit and promoting NMU to others. We did not then nor have we ever recieved any sort of recognition from NMU for these events and frankly, did not expect them.
Contrary to the limited and uneducated views of some of the previous people who have commented here, Lambda Chi Alpha made better men out of its graduates. My best friends are my brothers I met while at NMU. These men are not “drop outs” as some fool in a previous comment described, but lawyers, engineers, politicians and doctors. I left Lambda Chi Alpha at NMU to go to medical school and then to become a surgeon. This is what the fraternity offered to its young men. An example to live by that most do not have. I am honored to call all these men my brothers. Marquette has become a darker place without the light of the Lambda Chi’s. I am so sorry for your loss.

OH NO! Now there is one less place to buy friends at NMU.

Public safety should crack down on ALL the groups that allow underage drinking! Not just the Greeks! It’s dangerous and alot of underage people are taken advantage of when they are in drinking situations.

I would like to know the Graduation rate of the different sports team vrs the Greek system. Look into before you write it!

ABOUT TIME! Those kids are out of control. How many joined that group and failed out due to underage drinking abuse. Alot TRUST ME! This shut down only means more students are now going to graduate.
NMU Alum and LCA member • Apr 11, 2011 at 3:05 pm
Well, Greer finally got her way. What people dont understand is that a group of kids with some sort of organization and responsibility is WAY better than a group with no name, address, or accountibility. Did the kids do some stupid things? Yes. Did they get caught? Yes. Did the adults step forward to make the kids better? No.
Now that they are gone who does she think she is going to negotiate with when homecoming parties are out of control? Call the cops… thats it. Bust those horrible kids who drink and smoke rope.
Now there is no greek system at NMU. Does that make it a better school?

As an alum of Lambda Chi Alpha many years go this makes me upset. When I went to NMU many years go the school itself was also after the Greeks. Keep in mind that the current chapter should have watched and acted like gentleman. I can personally say that the Chapter in Marquette has helped the local community out for over 25 years. The current dean should have kicked out the problem members. It seems that the sports teams at NMU are overlooked and mishandled. All groups at Northern should be treat equally when it comes to such issues. I would like to see the NorthWind show both sides of the story. They should contact one of the founding members. Lastly, go back and look at NMU’s older year books. You will notice that NMU had a large Greek following. Why has NMU always gone after the Greeks. That’s my question…

Also, I find it odd that this article only covers one side of the issue and doesn’t have comments from that Fraternity’s adviser or a member. I’d be interested to hearing from both sides!
@WT, I totally agree! I don’t understand why certain organizations have preferential treatment over others. It doesn’t look right!

I see people are saying that this particular fraternity is being targeted…I guess the answer to that would be to crack down on all the other organizations that allow underage drinking. Personally, I would like to see NMU and Public Safety take more action against underage drinking and drug use in general (regardless of what organization is allowing it).
M • Apr 8, 2011 at 4:37 pm
They definitely are more targeted than any other organization on campus, I’m sure the Football house or the Hockey house has plenty of underage drinking going on. But because people pay to see the teams play, they are more lenient with them.
It’s truly a shame what happened, the Dean seems to vendetta against Greeks and it won’t be long until she wipes them out entirely.

I think all the administrators that attended school here as a undergrad must have unhappy memories of the campus and its institutions because they obviously aren’t interested in preserving any of them.
J • Apr 7, 2011 at 1:31 pm
@c
I don’t think that placing blame on other Fraternities or Sororities is the answer to this. I do understand that Lamba Chi was on probation and was recently taken off of probation before this incident went down, and the reason why the Dean of Students chose to kick them out instead of putting them on probation again.
With all this said though, I didn’t want to see one of our oldest Fraternities have to leave campus. This is very unfortunate.

I personally think the lamda’s are targeted because they have a house and therefor dont have to play by the same rules on campus. I think most people view the sig’s as the animal house of NMU. I am sure if campus police crash any given sig house party they would find multiple underage drinkers and sorority girls half naked and drunk out of their minds. just look for the vehicle pile up of parking on van evera on a thursday, friday or saturday night.
