Time’s Up. It’s the movement that has made headlines around the country for the last few weeks and has made an appearance at the Golden Globe Awards, with Oprah Winfrey’s speech becoming the talk of the night.
The Time’s Up movement started with people in Hollywood taking a stand. Although this particular movement started with sexual harassment in the film industry, it is something that affects other industries as well, like the news industry, which the Time’s Up movement illuminates on their website.
According to their statistics, 1in3womenfromtheageof 18 to 34 have been sexually harassed and 71 percent did not report it. Also, nearly half of the women in the United States said they have been sexually harassed. This is not OK.
Women should feel safe in their work environments. They shouldn’t have to worry about possibly being harassed by a coworker, or fear coming to work because they have already been harassed and don’t want it to happen again. Women, just like men, are there to work. They aren’t at a job just because they’re obligated to be. They are there because they want to be there and it’s what they have been trained to do.
There is also the fact that men can be victims of sexual harassment too. It’s not as widely talked about, but it is there. They too need to feel safe in their work environment.
They have a right to be at work and not have to worry, just like women shouldn’t have to worry.
How do we fix the issue of sexual harassment? Admittedly, I don’t know.
Yes, there are policies in place for sexual harassment. Yes, there are measures put in place in case it does happen. The policies have been seen first hand with perpetrators of sexual harassment who are called out and either step down from their positions or are terminated. But is it enough if the issue is still out there? I think not.
What I do know about the issue is that it will take everyone to work together to overcome it. One person cannot do it alone, nor should a person who has gone through sexual assault have to feel alone.
It is not just men nor women that need to stop. It is both. Nothing will get done if men continue to sexually harass women, and vice versa.
Everyone needs to take a stand against the issue and work together to make a change. Victims of sexual harassment need to continue to report their cases. Yes it will be hard, and it is not easy to do, but it needs to be done.
It is great that not only women, but men have taken a stand on the issue of sexual harassment and started standing up against it. This was seen at the Golden Globe Awards, and with people coming forward about being victims of sexual harassment.
Without both sides standing up for the issue and trying to fight against it, nothing will get done. This is just the start. Time’s up and women and men shouldn’t have to say “me too” anymore.
