After five months of planning, the first ASNMU Wildcat Farmer’s Market is coming to campus.
The market will host 55 vendors, 37 of which are local businesses or establishments, and 18 are students at NMU. The vendors will have a wide variety of items for customers to choose from, including clothes, jewelry, stickers, soaps, crocheted items, art, composting, workshops, cookies, coffee and flowers.
In addition to the vendors, the market will host a Zumba session, led by Professor Mark Shevy, live music by the student band Total Head, the Wildpups, a tie-dying station, lawn games and even a special appearance by Wildcat Willy. Students will also have opportunities to win free T-shirts and stickers while at the event.
The idea for the market was pitched a year ago by ASNMU’s now President Dana Hinckley after she participated as a vendor in the Marquette Farmer’s Market downtown.
“I thought it would be a great idea to bring it to campus because I didn’t see a lot of students there,” Hinckley said.
The idea was a hit amongst the assembly, but it took time for the group to iron out the details for their market.
“This is actually a great opportunity for students to connect with the community,” Hinckley said. “I want students to be able to freely explore the vendors, see what opportunities there are. I want them to be able to build connections with people, stay, talk and have fun at the event.”
The first ASNMU Wildcat Farmer’s Market will take place on Tuesday, Sept. 17, from 4-7 p.m. in Lot 1 behind the Northern Center.
