Writing Center hosts Halloween-themed write-in to motivate students’ writing

Categories:

Students gathered in the Writing Center in Harden Hall on Oct. 18 for a Halloween-themed write-in.

A write-in is an event where students can either bring writing they are working on or come in looking for inspiration for their next piece, all while enjoying some snacks. So far, write-ins have been held at the Writing Center every few years, and each time, the Writing Center employees put their own twist on the theme. This time, they provided Halloween-themed snacks and writing prompts for anyone who needed inspiration.

These events provide opportunities for students to work independently or collaborate with other students.

“People can come in, they can work by themselves, or they can come in to share their writing with others,” Senior Elizabeth Guinn said.

According to the students hosting the event, a write-in is not a tradition for the Writing Center, but they are working to change that.

“We’ve done some in the past, but it’s not by any means a yearly thing,” Junior Giovanni Mathews said. “I think that could be a goal for us.”

Students who attended the event said the write-in was a good time to decompress while still getting some work done.

“Events like these help me relax for a few hours,” Sophomore Aleksanteri Lakanen said. The Writing Center always has a great environment.”

The tutors hope students will spread the word about the Writing Center and what it has to offer.

“I think holding events like this is good because students come and they enjoy themselves, then they’ll come to other events and tell other people about the Writing center,” Guinn said.
