Culture Shock Film Society hosts movie showings to broaden students’ worldview

The Culture Shock Film Society gathered in The Science Building on Nov. 7 for their showing of the comedy, “Hundreds of Beavers.”

“We had a pretty decent turnout, and everyone enjoyed the movie a lot, everyone was laughing,” President Brendan Phalen said.

Vice President Summer Morrison agreed that the movie was interesting and funny.

“It was a really weird slapstick type movie, and it included different animation styles with live action,” Morrison said. “It was really cool artistically and it was also really funny.”

According to Phalen, the goal of the film society is to show cultural films for students to enjoy that they would not normally see in a movie theater or on their own time.

“[Our goal is] to bring in movies that otherwise would not be accessible to people and that helps to broaden your horizon,” Morrison said. “If you’re just watching movies that are presented to you at the theaters you’re not going to gain as much knowledge as these movies that tend to usually have some sort of social commentary.”

The club also makes it a goal to show movies that align with the time of year.

“When it comes to time periods like Latin American Heritage Month or gender week, we like to show things oriented towards that,” Phalen said.

These movies are meant to broaden students’ horizons and introduce them to various cultures by showing movies from different time periods, different languages and different nations. The club has a variety of ways in which they choose what movies will be shown.

“We have some forums open for people who want to give movie suggestions, and our last president made an itinerary,” Phalen said.

On top of that, the club gets some movie suggestions from IMDb’s list of top 100 weirdest movies. The club also tries not to show the same director or movies from the same time period twice in a row.

Phalen and Morrison urge students to attend a movie showing to see if the club is something they would be interested in.

“I’m not a movie fan at all but I still come to these every week because it’s really cool and fun and I like the experiences,” Morrison said.

The next movie showing will be on Thursday, Nov. 21 where they will show “Fantastic Mr. Fox” in The Science Building, and they have a surprise planned for the students who attend. The event will take place at 8:30 p.m. in room 270 and all students are free to attend.
