On Wednesday, Jan. 29 in Jamrich Hall, the NMU Foundation and NMU WellBeing hosted a Skill Builder focused on how to apply for donor funded scholarships. Last year, over $1.4 million in scholarships were awarded.

“Today we’re going to walk you through donor funded scholarships, how to apply for them and what they are. Then we will be working and workshopping on personal statements,” said Sam Kearney, a student coordinator at the NMU Foundation.

Kearney emphasized the importance of the Feb. 17 application deadline and scholarship requirements.

“One thing to note, if you do not meet the requirements, which would be in red for a scholarship, do not apply for that scholarship. You’re not going to get awarded it, so don’t spend your time doing that,” Kearney said. “The preferences are listed in yellow …. I would click on each of these and read through each of them and see if you fit the criteria for them.”

After going through how to apply, he moved onto starting a personal statement, which could be included with a student’s applications. This involved handing out a worksheet to each person present. The paper had a list of questions about one’s passions, their major and the reason they came to NMU.

“What I want everybody to do is to find a partner and have a conversation with them. You will then ask the questions on the worksheet paper and write each other’s answers down. This will be a good start for your personal statements,” Kearney said.

All students are encouraged to apply to the NMU donor funded scholarships on MyNMU.
