Student Support Services hosted a bake sale to raise money for student events on Friday, Feb. 14 in Hedgcock where students could purchase baked goods and Valentines.
The on-campus organization aids students who are low income, first generation or have a disability.
The items sold were all homemade by NMU staff and students, and customers paid by donation.
“Our whole office staff, and our student workers constructed the handmade Valentine cards for the Valentine Treat Sale,” said Linda Sirois, coordinator for Academic Support Services. “We all pitched in with baked goodies and we are lucky enough to receive a lot of delicious donated baked goods from our colleagues in the Dean of Students office, as well as our grants accountant.”
Sirois also used the bake sale as an opportunity to educate students about what Student Support Services has to offer and to answer any questions.
“We offer multiple kinds of holistic support for our students: one-on-one tutoring, a peer mentor program, special events and workshops, career exploration and personality assessments, financial aid, literacy guidance, guided academic advising and much more,” Sirois said. “Mostly, we are able to offer community and personal mentoring relationships with our students. This relationship aspect is the most valuable thing SSS is able to offer, according to our students.”
The staff and students who work with Student Support Services were pleased with the outcome of the bake sale.
“We had a great time at our sale and were fortunate enough to raise a good amount of money for our student events,” said Kelly Ryan, SSS student organization president. “Thank you to everyone who donated to our sale.”
