Reel Rock is a well-loved event that takes place annually, immersing students in the exhilarating experience of dangerous and record-breaking climbs. The event will feature three rock climbing-related films, highlighting major achievements in the world of climbing this year.

The showing will take place in Jamrich 1100 on Thursday, March 13, at 7 p.m. The films shown will be “Death of Villains,” “Riders on the Storm” and “The Cobra and the Heart.”

“Our hope for this event is to introduce more students and community members to the climbing club, as well as get everyone stoked for the incoming spring season,” said Lauren Maki, vice president of the South Superior Climbing Club. “Additionally, we want to raise awareness of ways to get involved in U.P. climbing through both the club and the Upper Peninsula Climbers Coalition (UPCC).”

The Reel Rock experience is not limited to viewing the featured films. Members of the Upper Peninsula Climbers Coalition will also be present to speak with attendees, and there will be a raffle with prizes courtesy of DownWind Sports.

“This event is one of the few we can host in the winter, as climbing is typically a warm-weather sport, so it is exciting for us to reconnect with our climbing community,” Maki said. “Additionally, this event helps us connect with students who may be interested in climbing and need a chill introduction to the sport and club.”

The NMU Outdoor Recreation Center is hosting Midnight Madness, a glow-in-the-dark climbing event, at the PEIF following the film showing. The group looks forward to hosting students from all backgrounds, including those who have climbed before, are looking to learn or simply want to have fun at the film viewing.
