Language is the bridge that connects cultures, shaping the way people think, express and interact. It is through language that literature comes to life, telling stories that transcend borders and time. From ancient epics to contemporary novels, literature reflects the values, struggles and aspirations of societies worldwide.

On Wednesday, March 19, from 5–6 p.m., the Department of Language, Literatures and International Studies hosted an informational gathering in Whitman’s Commons.

Many professors were present to answer any questions students may have about languages or any related topics. The professors were very welcoming and introduced themselves to any students whom they didn’t recognize.

“This is an opportunity for students interested in languages or international studies, as well as current students in languages, to talk to professors and hang out with other language students,” said department head Rebecca Ulland.

Students were given the opportunity to mingle among themselves and enjoy the free pizza and games set out. Even some of the professors were playing cornhole in the back of the room.

The study of languages unlocks deeper cultural understanding, fostering connections beyond spoken words. It provides insight into history, traditions and worldviews that might otherwise remain inaccessible. Each language carries its unique rhythm and structure, influencing both personal and collective identity.

International studies tie these elements together, exploring global interactions through historical, political and economic lenses. Literature and language play a vital role in diplomacy, cross-cultural communication and global cooperation. By understanding narratives from diverse perspectives, individuals can engage more effectively in an interconnected world.

“I didn’t realize there were so many opportunities when it comes to our language classes,” said student Mena Wylykanowitz. “The teachers were very inviting and did a great job of making me feel welcome.”

By embracing the study of languages, literatures and international studies, individuals gain the skills to communicate effectively, think critically and contribute meaningfully to a more interconnected world. These disciplines not only enrich personal knowledge but also promote cultural empathy and global awareness—essential qualities in today’s complex society.
