ASNMU election season begins

Categories:

Representing students’ voices is the drive of the Associated Students of Northern Michigan University (ASNMU), the student government on NMU’s campus.

This month the group will be hosting its annual election to decide which two students will be filling the roles of president and vice president.

Students wanting to fill the shoes of current President Dana Hinckley and Vice President Ruby Joseph had to throw their hat in the ring on March 28.

Students who applied will be taking part in a debate on campus on April 3 at 6 p.m. in Jamrich 1318. All students, faculty and Marquette community members are invited and encouraged to attend the event.

Any NMU student is eligible to vote in this election. Voting information will be sent out to NMU students on their nmu.edu email on the morning of April 9 at 8 a.m.

The voting polls will be open until April 11 at 5 p.m. The link to vote can also be found on ASNMU’s website here.

ASNMU chair of elections committee Kelly Ryan says the governing body has precautions that keep the elections fair and transparent.

[The] committee is composed of ASNMU members who are not running for a spot on ASNMU next year (this tends to be our graduating members), at least one student who is not an ASNMU member and our staff advisor,” Ryan said.

The assembly voted in will work on creating events and projects that directly benefit students’ wellbeing.

Ryan encourages all students to be attentive to this election, as even students who will be graduating can take part in the decision.

“Even if a student is not interested in running for a spot, they can still be involved by attending the debate and making an informed decision for voting,” Ryan said. “It is also important for graduating students to vote, because it is always best to leave NMU in good hands for next year.”

Last year’s elections had the biggest voter turnout in over a decade, and ASNMU continues to encourage students to be involved like they were the past year.

“I am excited to keep the steam rolling for this year and to have an even bigger voting turnout. ASNMU does a lot of incredible things on campus, and the ASNMU elections are a great way to be a part of this momentum,” Ryan said.

Election results will be announced on April 14, on ASMNU’s Instagram page. The ASNMU transfer of powers will take place on April 17, at 6 p.m. in Jamrich 1318.
