ASNMU, Office of Diversity and Inclusion to host community picnic

What better way to bring people together than a community picnic? This can be a familiar and nostalgic way to make sure students have a place on Northern’s campus and a community to turn to during times of uncertainty. Associated Students of NMU (ASNMU) and the Office of Diversity and Inclusion (ODI) invite students to attend their community picnic Saturday, April 12 at 12 p.m.

“I wanted to make sure students have a sense of community—to make sure they knew they had people there for them, even if the government or our university wasn’t,” said Ivy Fowler, representative for the College of Arts and Sciences. “Without our students, we wouldn’t be in the positions we are serving in student government, and I wanted to give back to them by hosting an event bringing people together.”

All students are welcome to attend the event and enjoy music, free food and community. Participants are also welcome to bring their own lunch or snacks if they would like. The picnic will be hosted behind the Northern Center if weather allows. If there is inclement weather, the picnic will take place on the second floor of Hedgecock.

“This event is really exciting for us because it allows orgs to know we care about them. We have a lot of diverse students in our population, and it allows us to give back to them,” Fowler said. “Also, working with the ODI has been an important piece of hosting this event, since they are helping to provide a lot of the outreach and materials needed for the event as well.”
