Tired of the same old campus food and craving that homemade charm? Then the NMU Hoop House has the perfect opportunity for you. The organization is hosting a homemade salsa verde workshop open to students and staff alike. Come learn how to make your own, locally sourced and delicious salsa. The event will be held Thursday, October 23rd, at 6 p.m.
Mr. Luis Martinetti of the EEGS Department is the guest demonstrator for the salsa event and will be instructing on what goes into making salsa verde. Co-leader of the Hoop House Abby Owen will be following her lead with a demonstration showcasing water bath canning practices to preserve the salsa.
“A lot of those skills are being lost as our grandparents, the generation that utilized those skills regularly, are getting older, and food supply chains make canned goods more accessible. Our intent is to promote the continuation of those skills,” said Abby Owen, co-leader of the Hoop House.
During the event, each participant will get their own recipe to follow and be able to head back home with their own jar of salsa. Students will get to have hands-on experiences throughout the entire process. As there is a limited amount of supplies, anyone who wishes to participate in this event must be registered on The Hub.
“This event is exciting for us because a lot of people come to the Hoop House to learn more about gardening, but we never really talk about what to do with the produce if you grow too much of it, so it’s exciting to talk more about what to do with the food you grow and for us to expand to hosting events outside of pulling weeds and watering,” said Owen.
Couldn’t make it? Is registration full? If there is enough interest in this meeting, the Hoop House would be open to hosting the event for a second time, so keep your eyes peeled! If salsa is not your thing, they will also be hosting sourdough starter and pickling workshops. For more information, you can visit The Hub.
