As autumn settles in and the air turns crisp, students are finding creative ways to make the most of the season. Between midterms, chilly mornings and cozy campus hangouts, there’s a certain buzz that only fall can bring. Whether it’s pumpkin-flavored everything or just the chance to take a break with friends, this time of year offers the perfect excuse to unwind and enjoy a little seasonal fun.
One campus event is doing just that by blending a festive spirit with a bit of cool-weather activity. Hosted by the Special Events Committee, Haunt the Rink invites students to lace up their skates, dress in costume and enjoy some spooky tunes on the ice. The open skate runs from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Lakeview Arena, giving students a chance to celebrate Halloween, show off their creativity and take a well-deserved break from the books.
Events like this one remind students that campus life isn’t just about lectures and late-night study sessions. The chance to kick back with friends and enjoy something seasonal helps build community in ways that go beyond the classroom. Whether someone is an experienced skater or stepping onto the ice for the first time, the focus is on having fun and soaking up the energy of the season.
Music and costumes add another layer of excitement, giving participants a chance to show off their creativity. From classic Halloween looks to funny group themes, the event encourages everyone to get into the spirit—literally. Even those who prefer to stay on the sidelines can still enjoy the atmosphere, cheer on their friends and take in the fall festivities.
“All the open skates are thrown by us, and the students love them, so we do them every year. We always theme them to make it a little bit more fun,” said Special Events Coordinator Brooklynn Kluz.
For many students, skating events like this are a welcome break from their usual routines. It’s a chance to laugh with friends, try something new and make the most of what campus life has to offer. Between the music, the costumes and the laid-back atmosphere, the event gives everyone a reason to stay active and enjoy the season in a fun, low-pressure way.
“It’s just nice to have something fun to do that’s not schoolwork for once,” said student Jenna Lewis. “Everyone’s just out here having a good time, and it kind of makes campus feel smaller—in a good way.”
As the evening winds down and the last few skaters step off the ice, it’s clear that events like these bring a little extra warmth to the cold season ahead. Whether students came for the costumes, the music or just to take a break, the laughter and good vibes linger long after the rink lights dim.
Students who missed out this time don’t have to wait long for another chance to join. The Special Events Committee hosts a variety of activities throughout the year, each designed to bring students together and add a little fun to campus life. By watching the HUB, students can register and stay informed about events like this one. Keep in mind, these events aren’t just for underclassmen; everyone is welcome to join, meet new people and make memories that last well beyond the semester!
