Students gathered in Jamrich Hall on Friday, Oct. 27 to learn how to register for classes for the next semester. The Student Success Department hosted the event, creating a welcoming environment to help new students feel comfortable and less anxious about registering.
Conor Mccoy and Susan Robison, both Senior Success Advisors, were present to help explain the registration process. They first mentioned that registration starts on Friday, Oct. 27 and will be open until January.
Beginning the workshop, McCoy and Robinson showed students how to see their registration notices, which is important as these show the date and time students will be able to register for courses. First, they went to MyNMU, then to Student Summary and then to Registration Notices. Upon looking at registration notices, students will notice that they may have one or more holds.
“So one of the first things you guys might notice if you go to register and you’re getting errors is that you have holds on your account not allowing you to register. So we wanted to go over just some of the common holds that can happen,” Mccoy said.
A hold can impact a student’s ability to register for courses once the registration window opens. It is important for students to check their holds each semester via the Holds tile in MyNMU. Some common holds are: advisor hold, registration hold, athletic hold and financial hold. After the student accomplishes what the hold is asking of them, the hold will be lifted.
Next, Robison discussed the course list, which is a PDF that can be found on the Registrar’s website. It allows students to see every course that is offered next semester.
“So the course list PDF is on the registrar’s website, and it is quite literally a PDF of every single course offered next semester. You can ‘control f’ the classes that you’re looking for, or you can just scroll through every single one. It’s like 171 pages,” Robison said.
Robison recommended that students make up a few rough drafts of their schedules due to the possibility of classes filling up. She provided blank scheduling sheets for students to use.
With that they went into searching for courses.
