Roommate Real Talk— Tips to Survive and Thrive in Shared Spaces

Living with other people can be a roller coaster. One minute you’re laughing about your mutual love of late-night snacks; the next you’re silently judging whose turn it was to take out the trash. That’s where Roommate Real Talk stepped in — a workshop designed to break the ice around some of the trickiest parts of shared living. This past Thursday, students gathered to learn practical strategies and swap stories, all with the goal of making shared households less stressful and more supportive.

Roommate Real Talk was hosted by WellBeing at Northern Michigan University on January 22, 2026, from 3 PM to 4 PM. The workshop, focused on helping students who live off campus build better communication and stronger home dynamics with their roommates. The event was geared toward improving student wellbeing by empowering participants with real—world advice for navigating expectations and resolving common conflicts.

The workshop kicked off with a casual welcome from the WellBeing team, who encouraged students to think openly about their living situations — good or bad.

A major part of the workshop involved discussions on setting expectations early. “I didn’t realize how important it is to talk about chores until now,” said one student. “We all assumed someone else was doing the dishes!” Throughout the session, students compared notes on best practices — from dividing responsibilities to deciding how noise levels should be handled. One off-campus resident shared, “After this, I finally feel ready to bring up rent, chores, and visitors with confidence.” Those kinds of exchanges helped foster a sense of camaraderie in the room.

In addition to the practical tools, laughter was abundant. Stories about mysteriously vanishing snacks or errant laundry piles reminded everyone that while shared living has its challenges, it also comes with moments that make college memorable. Another attendee summed it up well: “I walked in thinking this was going to be another boring meeting, but I left having learned something and feeling genuinely heard.”

As the workshop concluded, students took a few minutes to jot down personal takeaways and exchange contact info with potential new allies. “The best part was connecting with other students going through the same stuff,” one participant said. With newfound strategies and a bit more confidence, attendees left ready to tackle roommate life head-on.

At the heart of events like Roommate Real Talk is Northern Michigan University’s WellBeing team— a student-centered group dedicated to helping peers thrive socially, emotionally, and academically throughout their college experience. WellBeing isn’t a club you have to join; it’s a resource anyone enrolled at NMU can access. Whether it’s navigating stress during midterms, building healthy relationships or improving life skills like communication and time management, WellBeing’s main goal is to make campus life feel less overwhelming and more manageable. Their approach is rooted in real talk and real support — encouraging students to show up, share honestly and build community.

Roommate Real Talk offered an engaging blend of humor, honesty, and helpful advice— and it reminded students that shared living doesn’t have to be a mystery.
