Community Heats Up for Fire Soup Night by Inferno at NMU

A warm evening of good food, good company brought students together at campus gathering

A group of Wildcats braved the cold not just for warmth, but for a greater reward — steaming bowls of soup, cheap bread and good vibes. Sunday evening, students gathered around tables, mugs in hand, swapping stories between sips and spoonfuls. With laughter echoing, it had that perfect “college winter” energy — the kind of night you’ll remember when midterms start stacking up.

One of the biggest takeaways from Fire Soup Night wasn’t just the food — it was how easy it felt to connect. The setup encouraged people to slow down, sit together and actually talk, something that doesn’t always happen during a busy semester. With no loud music or packed schedule, conversations unfolded naturally, whether students were catching up with friends or meeting someone new for the first time. “This would be a good spot for a quote about meeting new people, feeling welcomed, or appreciating a laid-back campus event,” student Evelyn Renay said.

Fire Soup Night was hosted by Inferno House, a student community under NMU’s residence life house model. The event took place on Sunday, January 25, from 8–10 p.m. at the lodge on campus. Attendees could buy soup and bread at affordable prices, or bring a canned good for the food pantry in exchange for a bowl, blending food, philanthropy and community in one warm package.

Inferno House isn’t just an event organizer — it’s one of the unique “houses” in Northern Michigan University’s housing community, where groups of students living together build a vibe and identity of their own. NMU’s housing and residence life program organizes large residence halls into smaller communities called “houses,” each with its own personality and traditions. This setup helps make campus feel more like home for folks who live there.

For Inferno House, Fire Soup Night was a way to bring students together during a time of year when many people tend to isolate.

As students arrived, the smell of soup immediately set the mood. Volunteers served warm bowls while guests grabbed bread and found seats. Conversations sparked easily, with people introducing themselves, catching up with friends and meeting new ones. The atmosphere stayed relaxed throughout the night, with no pressure to rush in or out.

“This is a great spot to add a student perspective about the food, the vibe, or why they decided to come,” said attending student Amy Fortlest.

The option to bring a canned good instead of paying added an extra layer of meaning to the night. It gave students an easy way to support others while still enjoying a meal themselves, turning a simple gathering into something more impactful.

Fire Soup Night by Inferno proved that sometimes the best campus events are the simplest ones. Good food, welcoming people and a warm space were more than enough to draw students in from the cold. As winter continues, events like this remind Wildcats that community is always within reach — sometimes all it takes is a bowl of soup and a place to sit.
